Every component in a steam system will perform better and last longer if protected from harmful conditions found in practically all steam systems.  Strainers, used to remove pipe scale and foreign debris from steam systems, are used to protect everything in the steam loop from control valves to heat exchangers to steam traps.

Steam moisture separators are designed to remove entrained water from steam.  A trap that has been properly plumbed to drain a steam supply pipe will remove the water flowing into the drip pocket, but the entrained water will pass right by.  Use a separator with a trap to knock out the water and protect critical components such as control valves and requlators.

Applications typically produce flash steam when saturated condensate experiences a pressure drop as it passes through the steam trap.  This flash steam is frequently vented to the atmosphere at some point in the system.  High velocities in this vent pipe can carry a significant amount of condensate along.  This will cause wet or frozen roofs, ladders, walkways, and parking lots.  A vent hood is used to knock out this water, keeping equipment dry and personnel safe.

Safety relief valves are self powered, quick opening, valves used to protect equipment from damage due to excessive pressure.  A failed regulator, a bad transmitter, or damaged wiring can easily expose heat exchangers to pressures greater than their design rating.  Use an ASME rated safety relief valve with a drip pan elbow and a vent pipe to safely vent excess pressure to a non-hazardous location.

Series WSEP

Watson McDaniel's cast and fabricated steam separators are designed to separate the entrained moisture present in steam.  Dry and pure steam is more effective as a heat transfer medium and also provides excellent protection downstream of regulators and controls.
