Regulating valves are widely used in all types of applications to control pressure or temperature. Pressure regulators for steam service are used to reduce high pressure distribution steam to pressures more suitable for heat transfer applications. Because the latent heat of steam increases as pressure is reduced, pound for pound more energy will be available from low pressure steam than from high pressure steam. Also, process equipment designed to withstand low pressure steam will be lighter and less expensive than high pressure equipment.

Pilot operated valves use a small pilot regulator to sense pressure or temperature and control the action of a larger valve. This pilot regulator may be either internally or externally mounted. Use pilot operated regulators when sensitive, accurate control is required.

Direct acting regulators use a spring to balance the fluid pressure acting on the diaphragm. These regulators are available in both unbalanced and balanced designs.

Unbalanced regulators are single seated valves that are simple and compact. The delivery pressure will decrease somewhat as flow increases. This is called droop.

Balanced regulators are designed so that the force of the fluid pressure acting on the valve plug is equally opposed by either another valve plug (double seated valve) or a balancing piston. Balanced regulators exhibit less droop than unbalanced units. For a given body size, double seated regulators have higher capacities than single seated units, but they will also leak a small amount.
